Ivan Morris という人が執筆し、過去1970年代に出版されたことのある学術論文ですが、この度復刻刊行されました(2012年)

本書では、ヤマトタケルに始まる歴代日本のヒーローについて描かれています
彼らの特徴は、戦に破れたり体制に背いた為に汚名を着せられるなどして、志を持っていても道半ばで散っていった哀しい人達です
彼らの事を我国の一般庶民は貶しめることなく、彼らの心に寄りそい哀悼の意を表し慈しんできましたが、このような感性は他国では見られぬ特異なものだそうです
そこに着目し論文にまとめられたのが本書になりますが、それは三島由紀夫の勧めに因るそうです
